Punk hadn't been invented then, so it would have been hard for them to! I'm sure The Kinks just saw themselves as another Pop band, but Townshend definitely had a Punkish philosophy, whether he realised it or not.

You're right paddy. PT was heavily R&B influenced, with a liberal spritzing of surf, as well as a bit of the cabaret. I read once that PT felt his original ideas we're just pushed harder, faster and louder because of the way Keith and John played. That's not to discount that The Who was probably the Genesis of a burgeoning "angst" movement in Rock. You could probably make that arguement for the Stones as well. PT "knicked" that windmill from the little overhand swing that Keith Richards does

Many punk acts say The Who and The Kinks influenced them, but I doubt they thought of themselves as punk bands.
